Veterinary Surgery
Surgical Treatment for Dogs & Cats
Our veterinary team at Barrhaven Veterinary Hospital performs elective and medical surgeries to help maintain and restore good health for your dog or cat.
Whether your pet needs a routine spay or neuter, C-section, mass removal, or dental procedure, they are in good hands.
We will always ensure that you fully understand why we recommend a particular surgery for your pet and any post-operative care your cat or dog may need once they have returned home.
Surgical Procedures
At Barrhaven Veterinary Hospital, we perform medical and emergency surgeries to help treat diseases and conditions or repair injuries sustained through trauma.
Our veterinary team in Ottawa may perform or refer the following elective and non-elective surgeries on your pet:
-
Soft Tissue Surgery
Soft tissue surgery covers a range of ear, nose, and throat procedures, mass removals, and treatment of flesh wounds. Nearly all surgical procedures that are not under the orthopedic surgery umbrella fall into the soft tissue category.
Some other types of soft tissue surgeries include procedures for hepatic, urogenital, oncological, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, and skin disorders.
-
Spaying & Neutering
Spaying and neutering are very common surgical procedures performed to sterilize pets. These procedures can prevent the birth of unwanted litters, prevent disease, and extend the life expectancy of dogs and cats.
-
Dental Surgery
Our veterinary team performs dental surgeries to relieve pain and restore the oral health of dogs and cats. These procedures range from tooth extractions to gum disease treatment and jaw fracture repairs.
-
Mass Removal
Masses can grow on or under the skin or inside the body cavity of cats and dogs. While some masses may be removed for aesthetic purposes, others may be serious or life-threatening.
-
Foreign Body Removal
Sometimes, foreign objects are ingested by pets and get lodged inside a cat or dog's body. Whether your pet has eaten an object they shouldn't have or an accident has left them injured, we can perform foreign body surgery to remove it.
-
Wound Repair
A wound refers to an injury where living tissue has been cut, broken, burnt, torn, or otherwise damaged. Wounds must be cleaned, disinfected, and appropriately cared for by a qualified veterinarian as soon as possible to prevent infection and subsequent complications.
The Surgery Process
Before any surgery, we will complete a thorough pre-surgical assessment. This includes a physical examination of your pet and blood tests to determine whether they are at risk of anesthesia-related complications.
During each surgery, a nurse will continuously monitor your pet's vitals and administer anesthesia so your pet is asleep and feels no pain during the procedure.
Following surgery, we prioritize post-operative monitoring and pain management. Your veterinarian will also provide you with thorough instructions for at-home care.
Sterilization Protocols
Surgical protocols at our clinic include dedicated surgical suites kept completely sterile to prevent infection and cross-contamination.
Our veterinary team will always wear sterile attire in the surgical suite, and we carefully clean, sterilize and wrap our surgical instruments and equipment before every surgery.
